Analog Devices (ADI) is demonstrating a system that can run single pair Ethernet (SPE) over existing RS485 cabling in smart buildings. This allows building operators to run legacy protocols such as BACnet and Modbus over Ethernet infrastructure without changing the wiring.

This can even be updated to run power over Ethernet (PoE) over a single pair cable up to 52W to power remote sensors and actuators, although this is more likely for new build applications that still want to use the fieldbus protocols with existing equipment. Wifi 6 Route

The demonstration system at Embedded World (EW2023) this week runs BACnet over 10BaseT1L single pair Ethernet over a distance of up to 1km, suitable for RS-485 lines that are typically a maximum of 400m.

This combines the 120MHz Arm Cortex-M4 MAX32650 (originally from Maxim Integrated (now part of ADI) for protocol management with the ADIN1110 SPE MAC and PHY transceiver that also includes fault detection.

10BaseT1L SPE runs point to point, but a two port low complexity switch, the ADIN2111, allows a daisy chain or ring configuration to adapt to the RS-485 multidrop topology.
