The Don't Worry, Darling director quite literally had stars in her eyes

The Venice Film Festival red carpet never fails to bring much needed glamour to kick-off the autumn months (or end the summer, whichever way you look at it). Alongside the megawatt jewellery and sublime gowns, this year's event delivered enough beauty inspiration to carry us through the end-of-year festivities.

Smoky eyes (here's looking at you, Simone Ashley and Jodie Turner Smith) and slick, pulled-back hairdos dazzled on the red carpet, but it was Olivia Wilde's unexpected starry-eyed look that stole the show. The accomplished actor, producer and director of the much-anticipated film Don't Worry Darling attended a party in her honour while in Venice wearing a chic YSL black suit.

Wilde, who often favours cat-eye flicks on the red carpet, dialled up the glitz with a statement star motif gracing her right eye courtesy of make-up artist Wendy Rowe. Face gems are taking over the AW22 runways, as seen at Simone Rocha, Koche, and Paul Costelloe as beauty embraces the maximalism mood for the upcoming season.

It's easy to veer into a costumey, Glastonbury-ready category with sparkly decals, but Rowe's look for Wilde is all grown up thanks to a backdrop of perfected, clean skin and little else.

"I want something with a bit more air to it, so it wasn't such a solid shape. Her skin is visible, there's a bit of eyeliner," Rowe tells Bazaar exclusively, citing glam rock icon Marc Bolan as inspiration. "Olivia is a star, she's very cool."

Individual crystals were painstakingly applied with lash glue on a sticky back plastic before being transferred onto Wilde's face. It's a process Rowe describes as 'meditative' and took around three hours to complete. For the rest of the make-up look, Rowe used products by Pat McGrath Labs, starting with the Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Foundation and Blurring Under Eye Powder before enhancing Wilde's complexion with a sheer dusting of Divine Blush in Fleurtatious, a pale beige. For a natural-looking gleam on the cheekbones, Rowe applied a touch of Skin Fetish Highlighter and Balm.

Rowe punctuated the eyes with a graphic cat eye flick using Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner and generous coatings of Fetish Eyes Mascara. Lips were kept almost bare, save for a hint of MatteTrance Lipstick in Peep Show, a neutral that complements Wilde's skin tone.

"Everything needs to be modern and pared-back. It needs to be quite effortless," says Rowe.

For her tresses, hairstylist Christian Wood went for a 'baby Brigitte Bardot' vibe. "I thought her hair just needs to be undone, with a little oomph of sexiness added to it. A French cool girl look; very modern," Wood tells Bazaar from Venice. He blow dried the hair smooth before creating some bends using a GHD Soft Curl Tong.

Despite the nonchalant look, Wilde's hair still appeared polished thanks to a helping of Kérastase Elixir Ultime applied before the blow-dry. He then adds texture and volume with R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo on the roots and sprayed from a distance along the lengths. "I always think it's important that the hair has a good quality to it; a bit of shine even if you are going for a matte texture," explains Wood.

Wilde's sharp suiting and laidback hair works harmoniously with her make-up; the sparkle is magic dust on an ultra-cool look, rather than a full-blown, saccharine-sweet fairytale vibe. We'll be taking notes for when the party invites start rolling in...
