It's time to embrace 2022's hottest hue

From the internet’s obsession with Barbiecore, to fashion’s love affair with Valentino’s fuschia-dominated AW22 show, one thing is clear: pink is back. But it's not just back; it’s thriving. It’s everywhere you look – from the Insta-famous Ettore Sottsass mirror (Bella Hadid has one) and store facades (hello Glossier) to celebrities sporting head-to-toe pink on the red carpet. It's clear that pink’s renaissance era is in full swing, and make-up artists have been embracing the hue backstage too, with Pepto Bismol eyes in every style imaginable.

It's all great news to this long-time pink devotee. I did Barbiecore before it became a hashtag (I may have won a lookalike Barbie pageant at the age of 10…), I’ve subconsciously curated my wardrobe/stationery/tableware to be in varying flamingo shades and I’m all for candy floss eyeshadow. The one thing that still has me baffled? Pink lipstick.

As someone who feels most at home in a red lip, pink is a departure I’ve yet to commit to – and not for lack of trying. I’ve dabbled in rosy hues, but still they all appear jarring against my yellow undertones or leave me with an unhealthy pallor. That said, there's no denying the joyful allure of a good pink lip. “Pink lipstick is fun, hot and the ultimate coquettish lip colour,” agrees make-up artist Florrie White. “Choose a pink lip when you are going out to have fun for yourself and I promise everyone around you wants what you are having.”

Never one to shy away from a beauty challenge, I’m ready to give pink lipsticks another go, now armed with a useful tip from make-up artist Lisa Eldridge. “If you’re used to reds, you need a pink that's got red in it, so you'll feel more at home with it,” she tells me at her Covent Garden pop-up. As Eldridge layers her Skyscraper Rose on my lips, it imparts a similar brightening effect to red lipstick, but the vibe is punchier and fresher. On those overcast autumn days, a slick of vivid Schiaparelli pink might just be the beauty tonic we all need.

"I love the texture of these matte lipsticks. High pigment, great staying power; this shade is a beautiful muted deep rose." - Nikki Wolff

"A super glossy, moisturising lipstick in a beautiful wearable pink that suits every complexion. " - Nikki Wolff

"The rich deep tone of this lipstick means you don't have to apply many coats. Despite the shade intensity, it's still very lightweight in texture; it’s also really hydrating and gives a luminous finish. A stunning pop of fuchsia that's ideal for darker skin tones." -Joy Adenuga

"If you have more of a tan or olive tone, this is a flattering pink. It offers a hybrid of lip colour and balm, so it's really soft and nourishing to the lips and is ideal for those who are seeking more of a natural finish. This soft pink is truly gorgeous on post-summer tanned skin, and I love the fact that they are buildable too. Simply apply extra layers if you want a richer pink shade." -Joy Adenuga

"A quick slick of blue-based hot pink which brightens your complexion, emphasises your pout and puts a glint in your eye due to the blue pigment in the pink." -Florrie White

"This is a warm, deep yet non-shouty pink. Its texture reminds me of a velvety lush petal. You can apply it lightly for a natural, flower bud lip or build it up for a playful vibrant statement." -Florrie White

"This petal shaped lipstick is curved to fit the lip shape perfectly and I just adore this romantic pink shade. I love to pair it with glowy skin, a soft pearlescent eye and lash and let the pink hue be the main focus. It’s feminine, chic and eye-catching without looking overdone." -Cher Webb

"The idea was to replicate the magic of the texture of butterfly wings. It's colour that's been amplified thanks to glitter dust on top of it. If you look very closely to butterfly wings and what it does, it captures the light and makes the colour explode.

I tried to bring this technology to lipstick. It is not a metallic lipstick. It gave me the possibility to have this very bright, vibrant pink lipstick, that still makes me feel a tiny bit dangerous which is what I like." -Violette Serrat

"The tagline of this (lipstick) campaign was 'I don’t wear a pink, but I wear this pink'. It’s kind of like the 'badass' version of pink lipstick. You can wear it very light, or you can wear it very deep." -Violette Serrat

"This goes on so well, stays put and is the most beautiful pink which suits all skin tones and ages." -Zoë Taylor
