Human lips go through a lot in a day. Between make-up, hot drinks and exposure to the sun, lips are highly susceptible to drying out and cracking.

It is no wonder then that the hashtag #lipcare has reached a staggering 1.2 billion views on TikTok. But from this, there has been a steady rise in beauty consumers also searching for lip oils, with #lipoil sitting at over 325 million TikTok views.

The category remains niche, making up just 4% of global lip care launches in 2021 (Mintel), but they offer consumers a grown-up alternative to the Y2K lip gloss throwback.

Typically made from natural oils, the beauty product blurs the line between being both a moisturiser and a form of make-up – sitting snugly between lip balms and lip glosses.

And its growing popularity has had a boost from Hollywood as celebs from Lady Gaga to Bella Hadid have all been spotted using lip oils.

Beauty companies are certainly not letting the trending product category slide, with Dior’s Lip Glow Oil initially selling out in February. But who else is tapping into the oil rush?
